Meet the School Board’s New Student Representative – Sonja Hanson

Sonja Hanson PicutresDuring the 2018-2019 school year, Henry Sibley senior Sonja Hanson will serve as Student Representative to the District 197 School Board. Before Henry Sibley High School, Sonja attended Mendota Elementary School and Friendly Hills Middle School. She has served as captain of girls’ swim team for the past two years, and is an active member of Link Crew, Choir and the Gender Equality Club at Henry Sibley.

Outside of Sibley, Sonja has been involved in a number of activities including swimming for a club team, lifeguarding, St. Peter’s Catholic Church Choir and the Minnesota House of Representatives High School Page program. In this program, high school students are given a hands-on opportunity to learn about local government through meeting with legislators, attending legislative sessions and more. Participating in this program is what encouraged Sonja to apply for student representative to the school board.

“I think a lot of people don’t realize what goes into running a school district,” said Sonja. “I did the Page program through the House of Representatives last year to learn about government, and I think a lot of those things apply to the school board. It’s cool to see how that works while having a say and being able to share my opinion. I think that connection really made me want to apply.”

We asked Sonja a few questions about her experience at Henry Sibley, involvement with the School Board and her plans after graduation.

District 197: What high school activity is your favorite, and why?

Sonja: My favorite activity by far is the swim team because of the great group of girls we have participating.

Have you had any particularly influential experiences or teachers during your time in District 197?
The most influential teachers to me have been my English teachers especially Mr. [Glenn] Skov because he taught me how to become a much better writer.

What are your plans for after graduation?
I plan to attend a four-year college hopefully in Oregon where I want to pursue a law degree and become an attorney.

Have you taken any advanced courses while at Henry Sibley?
I have taken mostly advanced classes throughout my time at Sibley; the most notable ones being AP Psychology, Advanced World Literature, AP US History, and Advanced American Literature.

Why were you interested in being the Student Representative to the School Board?
I was interested in serving as the student representative because I wanted to give a different perspective to the board about students at Henry Sibley and their various wants and needs.

What are you hoping to learn on the School Board?
I want to learn more about how the school district functions and how it could relate to careers in the government systems.

Any additional comments?
I’m really excited to serve as student representative. I think the first meeting went really well and I’m looking forward to the rest of the year.
