Radon Testing

West St. Paul-Mendota Heights-Eagan Area Schools (District 197) takes safety very seriously and works diligently to ensure we provide safe and healthy learning and working environments for all of our students and staff members.

Starting in the 2018-2019 school year, District 197 will begin voluntarily testing for radon in all schools and buildings. Currently, there’s no requirement for school districts in Minnesota to test for radon.

Radon is a naturally-occurring gas that is produced below ground. It is very common throughout Minnesota. Radon is invisible, odorless and is released into the ambient air from fissures in sub-grade rocks beneath the soil.

With the assistance of an environmental consulting firm, testing will be completed in November 2018 following the Minnesota Department of Health’s best practices for Radon Measurement in Minnesota Schools.

Results from the testing will be posted below when they become available (approximately 4-6 weeks), along with any plans for mitigation, should it be necessary.

If you have any questions about radon testing in District 197, please contact Mark Fenton, Facilities Manager/Health and Safety, at 651-403-7325 or mark.fenton@isd197.org.
